The world moved within the walls of the Zsolnay Quarter for an evening: on 17 April, the E78 Hall was not merely a venue, but a meeting point for cultures. The 6th Stipendium Hungaricum Gala proved that international students do not only come to Pécs to study, but fill the city with life and energy.

Even at the opening of the doors, one could feel that this would not be an ordinary university ceremony. An excited anticipation vibrated in the air as students arriving from all over the world—many in national dress or elegant evening gowns—filled the space. The UP Dance Ensemble started the evening: their dynamic performance, intended as a surprise, immediately captivated the audience and established the relaxed atmosphere of the night.

During the official welcome speeches, informality remained the focus. Dr Attila Miseta, Rector, as host, opened not only the university’s doors but also its heart to the students, emphasising the strength of the UP international family. Richárd Bodrogi, Director General of the Tempus Public Foundation, looked across the room with pride, seeing the national success of the programme, while Deputy Mayor Csaba Ruzsa’s words revealed that the city of Pécs is grateful for the vibrancy that international youth bring to the local community. Dr István Tarrósy, head of the International Centre, highlighted the importance of mobility and new friendships, reminding everyone that borders, in reality, only exist on maps.

The most moving minutes of the evening were brought by the recognition of excellence; when the SH Excellence Award winners took to the stage, the applause was not only for their achievements, but also for the determination with which they hold their ground even thousands of kilometres away from home.

The Tenora Chorale also performed with beautiful melodies, followed by personal testimonials from students on video—smiles and occasional emotional moments showed what Hungary means to them.

Then came the music: the Band of Streets conjured such a street-party atmosphere in the hall that formality finally faded into the background, and students danced together with their lecturers and the city's leaders.

After the street food dinner and group photo sessions, the raffle kept the company in a fever of excitement, after which DJ Albrecht and Vedant Gupta took control. The rhythms coming from behind the mixing desk kept the crowd moving until midnight, finally forging this diverse, multicultural community into one.

This gala was not just an event, but proof that in Pécs, talents arriving from all corners of the world find not only recognition, but a true home.
