About the Institute
The Institute of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Pécs
The Institute of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Pécs is one of Hungary’s versatile and dynamically developing centers for biological education and research. Our mission is to integrate classical and modern fields of biology, providing high-quality education, an internationally competitive research environment, and an inspiring scientific community for our students and staff.
Biology is one of the most influential scientific disciplines of our time. It seeks answers to questions related to environmental change, biodiversity loss, epidemics, food security, nervous system processes, as well as molecular and genetic regulation. By addressing these global challenges, the Institute’s research and educational activities connect fundamental research, applied research, and modern higher education.
Education
The Institute of Biology serves as a major academic center for biological education at the University of Pécs. Our faculty members and researchers contribute to a broad spectrum of programmes spanning from undergraduate education to doctoral studies.
The Institute plays a key role in the educational and research activities of the following programmes:
- Biology BSc
- Biologist MSc
- Hydrobiologist MSc
- Viticulture and Oenology Engineering BSc
- Undivided and Short-Cycle Teacher Education Programmes
- Doctoral School of Biology and Sport Biology
Our programmes aim to train professionals with up-to-date theoretical knowledge, advanced laboratory and fieldwork skills, and strong independent research competencies. Students are encouraged to join the work of the Institute’s research groups from an early stage of their studies, providing first-hand experience with the methods and challenges of scientific research.
Practice-oriented education is a central element of our teaching philosophy. Laboratory courses, field exercises, research projects, and thesis work provide opportunities for students to gain experience in authentic biological research environments.
Research and Scientific Activities
The research profile of the Institute of Biology is highly diverse, enabling interdisciplinary collaborations and the integration of various biological disciplines. Our researchers participate in national and international collaborations, publish in leading international journals, and contribute to numerous research projects.
Research activities encompass, among others, the following areas:
- Molecular Biology and Genetics
- Microbiology and Virology
- Neurobiology
- Plant Biology and Plant Physiology
- Ecology and Nature Conservation
- Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystems
- Cell Biology
- Developmental Biology
- Animal and Plant Systematics
- Biogeography and Environmental Research
The Institute places special emphasis on research topics of environmental and societal relevance. Areas of active investigation include the impacts of climate change, ecosystem functioning, invasive species biology, molecular regulatory mechanisms, and the functioning of the nervous system.
Departments
The Institute of Biology consists of six departments that work closely together in both education and research:
- Department of Agricultural Biology
- Department of Ecology
- Department of Hydrobiology
- Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology
- Department of Neurobiology
- Department of Plant Biology
International Relations and Collaborations
The Institute of Biology actively participates in national and international scientific collaborations. Our faculty members and researchers are regularly involved in international research projects, scientific conferences, and collaborative publications.
Students have access to a variety of mobility opportunities, including study periods abroad. The Institute aims to equip its graduates with international experience, a modern scientific perspective, and competitive knowledge for careers in academia, research, industry, and other professional fields.
Student Community and Talent Development
The Institute places great emphasis on supporting student excellence and fostering scientific engagement. Students are encouraged to participate in research projects, academic competitions, and professional development activities.
Professional growth is supported through conferences, field courses, departmental events, scientific lectures, and research group activities. We consider close professional interaction between students and faculty members essential, creating a supportive and inspiring environment for learning, development, and scientific discovery.
